Tracing Demo 4: Samples Near Industry Facilities

Demo Question: What samples have been taken near waste treatment facilities?

Use Case Area: Tracing Potential Contamination Sources

This demo shows how SAWGraph can connect environmental sampling results with nearby facilities and industry classifications. It demonstrates how spatial proximity can be used to identify potential relationships between observed PFAS results and facilities that may warrant further investigation.

What This Demo Connects

Environmental Samples

Sampling locations and PFAS results represented in SAWGraph, including different sample materials and measured substances.

Facilities

Waste Treatment and Disposal facilities represented through EPA Facility Registry Service data.

Industry Classifications

NAICS-based industry categories used to distinguish broader Waste Treatment and Disposal facilities from more specific facility types.

Demo Results

The map displays environmental sample points located within 1–2 km of Waste Treatment and Disposal facilities, along with facilities in the represented industry categories.

Facilities are grouped by NAICS-based industry classification, allowing users to compare sample locations with different types of nearby waste treatment and disposal facilities. Spatial proximity identifies a potential relationship for investigation, but it does not establish that a nearby facility released PFAS or caused a particular sample result.

The map is interactive. Pan and zoom to explore the results, use the layer panel to show or hide different facility categories, and explore mapped features for additional information.

Nearby Samples and Waste Treatment Facilities

This example compares PFAS sampling locations with nearby Waste Treatment and Disposal facilities. Sample points are shown together with facilities grouped by industry classification.

Available layers include Sample Points, Waste Treatment and Disposal, Hazardous Waste Treatment and Disposal, Solid Waste Combustors and Incinerators, Solid Waste Landfill, and Other Nonhazardous Waste Treatment and Disposal.

Code and Query Resources
